Learn about the Competent Authority Pathway.
A short course if you are wanting to work as a doctor in Australia and are from any of the following countries, which qualify you for the competent authority pathway:
- United Kingdom
- Republic of Ireland
- Canada
- United States
If obtaining a post in medicine is your definition of viable then the Competent Authority Pathway is generally considered to be the most viable of the four pathways for international doctors working in Australia.
And the statistics don’t lie.
In 2018 there were 1,045 applications from IMG doctors for provisional registration in Australia with 1,001 of these being granted. That’s a 96% success rate.
If you compare this to the Standard Pathway process which requires you to sit 2 examinations with significant failure rates prior to being able to apply for jobs then the Competent Authority Pathway does sound very viable.
But as you will come to know through this course there are still a number of hurdles and challenges to face.

Ok
Thank you for your course. I just had a quick question. How long does it take to receive the general registration after application? Can you apply for this early in your provisional year for example, 2 months prior to completion of the supervised placement?
No. As you need to “Provide evidence that you have satisfactorily completed 12 months (47 weeks full-time equivalent) of approved supervised practice. This must be in the form of work performance reports ( template form WRIG-30 ) completed by your Board approved supervisor(s).”
So it is unlikely that you will be able to do this earlier than 12 months.
The Medical Board will give you an extension to your Provisional Registration if required.
Hello
also a quick question
My son is a medical grad from Ireland completing his internship year theee now He applied and was deemed eligible for the WA medical resident officer recruitment pool and is now waiting to hear if he gets any offers , is there anything else to be done? Can he contact providers or just wait and and idea of offers to applicants ratio?
Thanks !
Alan ( canadian MD)
Hi Alan
If your sone was made eligible last year in WA then the eligibility time limit has likely expired. Once he gains his Internship Cert he can apply for RMO jobs here under the Competent Authority Pathway.
